Growing Connections Along the Way

Although Grow Together is centred around learning to grow food, one of the things we're really pleased to see developing is the social side of the project.

The feedback from this session included people saying they enjoyed "meeting like minded people", being part of "a friendly group" and having the opportunity to learn from different people.

One participant summed it up nicely:

"Really enjoy listening to different people and learning new things."

For us, that's a really important part of what Grow Together is about. We're not just helping people develop practical growing skills, we're also creating opportunities to get together, have conversations and make connections.

It was also lovely to see so many positive comments about Lle Hapus, with several people telling us how much they enjoyed the venue.

Yesterday, Thursday 8th October, we held our third Grow Together session, this time at Lle Hapus in Wrexham. With microgreens to plant, plenty to learn about nutrition and lots of opportunities to ask questions, there was quite a bit to fit into the afternoon!

It's hard to believe that we're already three sessions into the project, and it's been lovely seeing everyone come together, share their experiences and continue learning new things.

Getting to Know Microgreens

We welcomed back Mark Roberts from GroZen, who introduced everyone to the world of microgreens and how easy they can be to grow at home.

Microgreens are young edible plants, harvested when they're still small. They don't need much space, can be grown indoors and are a great way of adding something fresh to everyday meals.

Mark explained how to grow and care for them, and everyone had the chance to plant their own seeds to take home.

One of the things we love about this project is that participants get to try things for themselves. It's not just about listening to someone explain how something works, it's about having a go and hopefully feeling confident enough to continue at home.

We also had a Q&A with Mark, giving everyone the opportunity to ask questions and pick up a few more growing tips.

Can We Have More Sessions, Please?

One of our favourite things to read in the feedback was that people would like the project to continue.

One participant told us:

"Loved the session!! Wish there was more than 4 sessions."

Another simply said:

"Keep it all going."

It's really encouraging to hear that people are enjoying the sessions enough to want more.

We're also taking on board suggestions about allowing more time for activities, providing clearer instructions during practical tasks and sharing more recipes and ideas for using what people grow.

As with all our projects, participant feedback is really important to us. It helps us understand what's working well and what we could do differently in the future.

Looking Ahead

With just one session remaining, we're looking forward to bringing everyone together again and hearing how they've been getting on with their hydroponic planters and newly planted microgreens.

From learning how to set up a hydroponic system, to exploring food, nutrition and growing our own microgreens, it's been lovely watching the project develop and seeing the different things people are taking away from each session.

A big thank you to Mark Roberts from GroZen, Dr Isabella Nyambayo from Wrexham University, Lle Hapus and, of course, everyone who joined us.

Grow Together is delivered by Done Together CIC with funding through the Communities for Work Trailblazer programme.

Food, Nutrition and a Few Things to Think About!

We were also delighted to welcome Dr Isabella Nyambayo from Wrexham University, who joined us to talk about nutrition and the different ways that plants and the foods we eat can benefit our bodies.

Isabella shared her knowledge about nutrients, vitamins and healthy eating, encouraging everyone to think about what we eat and how we prepare our food.

There were some really interesting conversations about different cooking methods, getting the most from our vegetables and ways of including more variety in our diets.

Looking through the feedback afterwards, it was clear that Isabella's talk had really got people thinking.

Several participants mentioned learning something new about food preparation and nutrition, while others particularly enjoyed Isabella's enthusiasm and knowledge.

One participant said they had especially enjoyed:

"The passion and knowledge of Isabella."

Another commented on how much they enjoyed listening to someone talk about a subject they were so passionate about.

It's lovely when a session gets people thinking, asking questions and perhaps even considering trying something different at home.
