Could you grow five edible plants at home in twelve weeks?
You do not need a garden, greenhouse or an impressive history of keeping plants alive. Growing Together: The Windowsill Project has been designed for kitchens, flats, windowsills and small spaces, including homes where a vegetable patch is simply not an option.
Funded by the Communities for Work Trailblazer Fund, this free community challenge begins at Tŷ Pawb on Thursday 20 August 2026 and is open to people aged 16 and over.
Everyone taking part will receive a hydroponic windowsill planter to keep, five edible plants to grow from seed and extra plant pots to help them continue growing at home.
Growing without soil
Hydroponics uses water and a special growing material instead of traditional soil.
It sounds technical, but the planter itself is simple to use. It is also designed to make growing easier and plants slightly harder to kill, which is reassuring for anyone who has watched a supermarket herb slowly give up on the kitchen windowsill.
During the first session, participants will build and plant their hydroponic kit with support from local experts. Nobody will be handed a box of equipment and expected to work everything out alone.
Easy-to-follow growing guides will be provided, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions as the plants develop.
Four sessions across twelve weeks
The group will meet at Tŷ Pawb on:
Thursday 20 August
Thursday 10 September
Thursday 8 October
Thursday 5 November
Each session will include practical learning, free food and refreshments, and time to compare progress with other participants.
Together, we will learn how to care for the plants, spot problems and make adjustments when something is not growing as expected. At least one plant will probably decide to be difficult. That is part of learning, not a reason to give up.
The project will also include a microgreens session, helping participants grow nutritious food for salads, sandwiches and smoothies. There will be a practical cooking demonstration, healthy recipes and ideas for using the fresh ingredients grown at home.
Supporting real local research
One of the most interesting parts of the challenge is the opportunity to contribute to research by Wrexham University’s Dietetics Department.
At around week eight, participants will be asked to bring small cuttings from some of their plants. The university team will analyse samples grown in different locations across Wrexham to explore whether there are any nutritional differences.
It means every kitchen windowsill involved could contribute a small part to a much bigger local research question.
A project to complete together
Places are free, but participants must attend all four sessions.
This is not a one-off workshop where people collect a planter and disappear. The sessions have been planned as a complete twelve-week journey, from planting the first seeds to sharing the research findings and celebrating what everyone has grown.
Individuals, families and community organisations are welcome. No previous gardening experience is needed, although experienced growers can join too.
At the final session, we will celebrate everyone’s progress, share what the research has found and award a prize for the winning plant. Participants will also receive resources to help them continue growing after the project finishes.
Thanks to funding from the Communities for Work Trailblazer Fund, the planter, plants, equipment, practical sessions, cooking activities, food and refreshments are all provided free of charge.
Sometimes growing fresh food begins with nothing more than a planter, five seeds and a sunny windowsill.
