The Wrecsam Photomarathon takes place on Saturday 22 August 2026, and if you are thinking about joining us, here are the answers to the questions you are most likely to have. The basic idea is simple: at 12.30pm you will receive four mystery prompts. You then have three hours to take one photograph inspired by each prompt and submit all four by 3.30pm.
There are three age categories:
6–11 years
11–17 years
18+
You can get your prompts via email, or in person by collecting an envelope from Brynteg or Wrexham Library. Please turn up at the library you have registered at, between 12 and 12.25pm, ready to open your envelope at 12.30pm.
Can families enter together?
Yes. Families are very welcome. You can head out together, explore the same places and help one another look for ideas. Because each age category has four different prompts, family members may actually be looking for completely different things while they are walking around together. It means a family can share the experience without everybody having to produce the same type of photograph.
Whats important?
All participants should stay safe whilst taking part. Do not risk injury to yourselves or others in order to take a picture. Children taking part should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
Can I use my phone?
Yes. You can use a phone, tablet, compact camera, DSLR or whatever camera you already have. You do not need specialist photography equipment.
The challenge is about your idea and how you interpret the prompt, not who owns the most expensive camera.
Where can I go?
At 12.30pm, you can open your envelope from either Wrexham Library or Brynteg Library then you can head off. The three hours are yours to explore and take photographs wherever you choose as long as it is in the county of Wrexham.
When will the prompts be released?
The envelopes can be opened at 12.30pm on Saturday 22nd August and the online prompts will be released at the same time.
Are there any restrictions on the photographs or taking part?
This is an amateur photography competition however professionals are welcome to take part. They must indicate that they are professionals during the registration process and are not eligible to win the £25 prize however their photos will be displayed online and may be used by the Wrecsam2029 City of Culture bid.
If you take a picture of anyone’s face, you will need their consent. You will have to explain that you are taking part in this Photomarathon and that their image will be displayed on a website and possibly online and print materials. If they say no, you will need to edit them out or delete the photo. You cannot submit a picture with people’s faces in it, if they have not agreed.
Please note – we will not accept photos with text or images added to them. Editing is entirely optional. An unedited phone photograph has just as much chance of catching the judges' attention. How do I submit my photographs?
Photos should be sent to photos@donetogether.co.uk with your full name, age and the name of the prompt. It should be sent from the email address that you registered with where possible. You can send via WeTransfer. Please do not leave sending them until 3.29pm as we will not accept entries after 3.30pm.
Can photographs be edited?
Yes. You can crop, adjust colour and lighting, use filters or get more creative with your editing if you want to.
How will the winners be chosen?
Our judges will choose the winning photographs and all winners will be notified by Wednesday 9th September with a £25 gift voucher being sent within the following week.
And Finally...
Most importantly, the Wrecsam Photomarathon is an excuse to get out, look around and notice things you would normally pass without a second thought.
Four prompts. Four photographs. Three hours.
