What could you photograph in Wrecsam if we gave you four completely different words and three hours to work with?
That is the challenge behind our first Wrecsam Photomarathon, taking place on Saturday 22 August 2026.
You do not need an expensive camera, specialist equipment or photography experience. A phone camera is absolutely fine. All you need is a little curiosity and a willingness to look at familiar places differently.
How the Photomarathon works
At 12.30pm, everyone taking part will receive four words or short phrases.
Your challenge is to take one photograph inspired by each prompt and submit all four images by 3.30pm on the same day.
Participants joining in person can collect a sealed envelope containing the four prompts from Wrexham Library or Brynteg Library. Once you have collected your envelope, you are free to head off and take your photographs wherever you choose. You do not need to spend the three hours at the library.
Those taking part online will receive the prompts directly by email at 12.30pm.
We quite like the idea of everyone opening their envelopes or inboxes at the same time, then heading off in completely different directions.
Four prompts with no correct answers
The words will be open to interpretation.
We are not looking for everyone to photograph the most obvious answer. One person might notice an unusual building, another might focus on a reflection, an expression or a tiny detail most people walk past.
Children will probably spot things adults miss entirely. That is part of the fun.
This is not a race around Wrecsam or a test of technical photography. You can take your time, explore your surroundings and decide what each prompt means to you.
Designed for different ages and abilities
We wanted to create a summer activity that people could join without needing to buy anything first.
Phone cameras are welcome. There is no requirement to understand complicated settings, own editing software or know the rules of professional photography.
Families can take part together, friends can make an afternoon of it, or you can complete the challenge on your own. The event is open to everyone aged six and over, although younger participants will need to take part with an adult.
Offering both envelope collection and email delivery also means people can choose the option that works best for them.
Four chances to win
One winning photograph will be selected for each prompt, with a £25 prize for each winning image.
Judging will focus on the idea behind the photograph and how creatively it responds to the word, not who owns the most expensive camera.
Most importantly, we want the Photomarathon to encourage people to slow down, explore and notice Wrecsam from a different perspective.
