Why We Created a Harry Styles Pause & Paint Evening

A room full of Harry Styles paintings, plenty of conversation and two hours without pressure. We look back at why we created our relaxed Pause & Paint evening at Pictura.

Sometimes people need a reason to leave the house that is not a meeting, appointment or another thing they are expected to achieve.

That was the thinking behind our Harry Styles Pause & Paint evening.

We wanted something relaxed where people could take a couple of hours out, sit around a table, paint, talk and have fun. No experience needed. No pressure to create a masterpiece. Nobody had to think of themselves as artistic.

They just had to come along.

Why Pause & Paint?

The word “pause” mattered.

Life fills up quickly with work, family, caring responsibilities and everything else. Even when people have free time, they do not always give themselves permission to spend it doing something simply because they enjoy it.

We were not making big claims about what painting could achieve. This was not therapy, and nobody’s problems were going to disappear in two hours.

It was a pause. A chance to do something different, spend time with other people and focus on what colour to add next.

Sometimes that is enough.

Why Harry Styles?

Because not every creative event needs a serious theme.

Harry Styles gave the evening a playful starting point and made it less intimidating than handing somebody a blank canvas and asking them to paint whatever they wanted.

There was something genuinely fun about a room full of people creating their own versions of the same famous face. Some paintings were carefully planned. Others developed in unexpected directions.

Painting together

The session took place at Pictura in Chester, with everyone sitting together around the tables.

Painting was only part of the evening. People compared progress, borrowed ideas and reassured one another when something did not look right. There were quiet moments, plenty of conversation and the occasional decision that more paint would probably fix everything.

Shared creative activities make conversation easier. People can join in as much or as little as they want, and if the chat pauses, there is still something to do with your hands.

Fun still matters

The evening felt informal, but relaxed events still need planning. We arranged the venue, managed bookings, prepared materials and made it clear that beginners really were welcome.

Pictura helped us keep the session affordable, and Done Together provided further support through our social-impact funding. Cost can be the difference between somebody thinking an event sounds lovely and actually being able to attend.

We also believe people are allowed to do something simply because it is enjoyable.

Not every community activity needs to lead to a qualification or dramatic outcome. Sometimes the value is spending an evening painting Harry Styles, talking to people you might not otherwise have met and thinking about something other than your usual responsibilities.

By the end, everyone had something to take home. More importantly, they had spent time doing something purely for fun.

We provided the space, the materials and a famous face to paint. The rest happened around the table.
