You Asked for Women-Only Self-Defence. Here Is the Course We Have Created

Shaped by local feedback, our four-week women-only self-defence course offers practical evening training for women and girls aged 13+, with all four sessions subsidised to just £10.

When we first started exploring self-defence training in Wrexham, we could have guessed what people wanted.

We did not.

We asked women and girls directly, and the answers were remarkably consistent. People wanted women-only sessions, practical techniques and evening classes they could attend around work, school and family life.

Many mentioned walking or travelling alone, street awareness and knowing what to do when a situation begins to feel unsafe.

They were not asking for dramatic martial arts moves or false promises that four sessions could remove every risk. They wanted useful skills, better awareness and the chance to practise in a supportive environment.

So that is what we have created.

Four practical evening sessions

The Women’s and Girls’ Self-Defence and Street Awareness Course begins on Thursday 10 September 2026 and runs for four consecutive weeks.

Sessions will take place from 6.15pm to 7.45pm at All Saints Church, Poyser Street, Wrexham. The course is open to women and girls aged 13 and over.

The evening timing came directly from the consultation. People told us daytime sessions would rule out many women who work, study or have caring responsibilities.

The women-only format mattered too. Participants wanted somewhere they could ask questions, practise and learn without feeling self-conscious or uncomfortable.

That feedback shaped the course rather than being added afterwards to justify decisions we had already made.

Experienced instructors

The training will be led by Chris Corcoran from the North Wales Police Self Defence Section, alongside Paul Jones and senior instructor Hayley Scarrett.

Chris is a retired North Wales Police Chief Superintendent with more than 50 years of martial arts experience. Paul is a retired Police Superintendent, and the team has delivered similar training across North Wales for many years.

Done Together Lead Director Natalie had already attended one of Chris’s classes with her own family.

They learned practical techniques that felt particularly useful as her children prepared to move on to secondary school and college. That personal experience gave us confidence that the course would be grounded in realistic situations rather than looking impressive for five minutes and being forgotten afterwards.

Why the whole course costs £10

The price is £10 for all four sessions, not £10 per week.

Done Together CIC is subsidising the course through our Together Fund. A percentage of the income we earn through commissioned projects is reinvested into affordable community activities.

That means organisations and businesses that have paid Done Together to deliver work have indirectly helped local women and girls access this training.

This is exactly what we created the Together Fund for.

A course is not accessible if the cost immediately excludes the people who asked for it. At the same time, the small booking fee helps secure commitment across all four sessions.

Practical skills alongside wider change

The course arrives as North Wales Police renews its focus on violence against women and girls in Wrexham.

Environmental safety, policing and prevention work are vital. Women should never be made responsible for other people’s threatening or violent behaviour.

Practical skills still have a place alongside that wider work.

The course will help participants think about awareness, confidence, personal space and responding to everyday situations. It cannot guarantee anybody’s safety, and we will not pretend it can.

What it can offer is preparation, knowledge and the chance to learn with other women in a positive environment.

We asked what people needed. They answered clearly.

Now the course is ready.
