£4,200 grant win to launch Wrexham’s first series of Afro hair workshops

Done Together CIC is proud to announce that we’ve been awarded just over £4,200 to deliver Wrexham’s first-ever series of Afro hair education workshops.

This programme builds on our Director Natalie’s earlier work, after she co-created and delivered a pilot Afro hair workshop in early 2025 during her previous role at Wrexham University. The pilot was created in conjunction with the Equality and Diversity Project lead, Yasmin Washbrook, and Dare2Dream hair salon’s Helen Gibson – who is the salon manager and graduate of Wrexham University.

The funding comes from the Welsh Government’s Culture Grant Scheme for Grassroots Organisations, which supports community projects led by and for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people across Wales. Diverse Cymru, now part of Adferiad, works nationally to improve equality, inclusion and representation.

This project also supports the Welsh Government’s Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan, which calls for more inclusive, culturally relevant activities across the country.

What the funding will support

With this grant, Done Together CIC will deliver five Afro hair workshops in February 2026:

  • Four in-person sessions across Wrexham

  • One online session for those who can’t attend in person

Each workshop is designed to give people practical knowledge, confidence and reassurance when caring for afro-textured hair. Sessions will include:

  • Simple explanations of hair science, including porosity, moisture and texture

  • Making low-cost, natural hair masks using everyday food ingredients

  • Demonstrations of protective hairstyles with local stylists

  • A live Q&A with professionals

  • Take-home guides and a personal hair care diary

We expect around 100 participants to take part, including families, carers and young people from Black and mixed-heritage communities, as well as anyone who wants to feel more confident caring for afro-textured hair.

Unlike professional training designed solely for qualified stylists, these workshops are for everyday people — parents, foster carers, teachers, youth workers and anyone providing day-to-day support. They’re also suitable for professionals who haven’t previously received textured-hair training, from trainee stylists to experienced hairdressers looking to broaden their skills.

The aim is simple: to close the knowledge gap for anyone who combs, styles or supports someone with textured hair across home, school, health and community settings.

Why these workshops matter

Wrexham has a small but growing Black and mixed-heritage population, yet access to afro-textured hair care, specialist advice and culturally relevant spaces remains limited. This lack of access can affect confidence, wellbeing and a sense of identity.

Natalie Edwards, Director of Done Together CIC, explains:

“Hair is part of identity. These workshops are about more than styling — they’re about belonging.”

Natalie moved to Wrexham in her teens and experienced first-hand the lack of access to afro hair services, community and education. She understands how important it is to feel seen, supported and represented.

This is a first for the city and an exciting step forward for cultural representation and inclusion in Wrexham.

Our mission and Wrecsam2029

This project reflects Done Together’s mission to celebrate culture, build confidence and help people to feel they belong.

By creating inclusive, community-led learning spaces, we’re supporting Wrecsam2029: UK City of Culture, which we proudly back. These workshops showcase the creativity, identity and community spirit that make Wrexham a strong contender for the title.

Looking to the future

Equipment and materials bought through this grant will be reused so the programme can continue beyond the first set of workshops. Done Together CIC hopes to grow this work across Wales, creating long-term, community-driven spaces for learning and connection.

As Natalie adds:

“We want Wrexham to be a place where inclusion isn’t just a goal — it’s something people feel every day. These workshops take us a step closer.”
